Surface Mud Removal
Mud is going to come in clumps. Some of it will have been ground into the carpet fibers all wet and gooey, some of it will be in harder chunks that have remained on the surface of the fibers. You will first need to target those chunks and pick those up. Grab as much of it as you can from the surface of the carpet so all that remains is the gooey stuff that has soaked further down.
Allow It to Dry
Now that you’ve picked up the surface material, let the rest of it dry. Remember, mud is just wet dirt and when it dries it will revert back to that form. Vacuum the Area
You’ve waited with bated breath for the wet mud to turn back into dry dirt. Now you can start to clean up the residual mess that remains by vacuuming the area thoroughly. But be sure the carpet is completely dry first, otherwise the vacuum will not pick up the mud but spread it around even more. This is also a job you want to do with deliberate care and attention to detail. Don’t rush, go slow. This is the part where you are aiming to remove as much dirt and soil from the carpet as possible.
You may also want to avoid running the entire vacuum cleaner over the area and use one of the attachments instead. That way you can really get into the nooks and crannies in between your fibers and remove the dirt that has fallen deeper towards the backing material.
If some of the dirt is still adhered to the fibers, use a tool to scrape it away and then vacuum.
Cleaning the Spot
All of the dirt has been picked up and a little discoloration has been left behind. That’s okay, now you can spot clean the carpet with a mix of warm water and a dab of laundry detergent. Get a clean dry cloth and dip it into the water. Dab at the remaining residue, gently, until you’ve eliminated any remnants of dirt.
