Pizza has existed since the times of the Ancient Greeks and Romans and the Ancient Egyptians. It was not like the pizza we know today but was the same idea – a kind of flatbread topped with olive oil, herbs and spices. However, it wasn’t until the 16th Century, when tomatoes started to gain popularity in Italy that pizza as we know it started to evolve.

Readily available tomatoes were loved by the poor people of Naples who started to use them when making dough. The idea of a dough style food, topped with tomatoes and cheese was something that took off quickly, especially with workmen who worked at the port of Naples and were often poor and worked long hours. This was a food that was easy to eat on the go as well as being filling and hearty.

For a long time, pizza was associated with the poor underclasses in Naples and dismissed by wealthier people. However, this started to change in the late 1800s, when the Queen Margherita asked to try some of this ‘Peasant bread’ as it was known and loved it – from then on, the word spread as did the recipes and pizza went on to become one of the world’s best loved foods!
