The cathedral has a spire that is 123 metres tall and is the tallest spire in the country. The height of the spire is thought to be one of the reasons that merchants and pilgrims were able to navigate their way to the city.

Back in 1218 the then Bishop of Salisbury decided to leave the original cathedral that was based at Old Sarum and decided to have a new cathedral built along the banks of the River Avon. The new cathedral has the largest cloister space and cathedral close of all cathedrals in the UK. It spans across an incredible 80 acres.

The cathedral is also home to one of only four surviving copies of the Magna Carta and thousands of people visit each year to see these wonderful books. It is one of only three cathedrals that do not have a set of ringing bells. However, it does have one of the earliest mechanical clocks that strikes every fifteen minutes and creates a beautiful noise in the cathedral space.
